Charleston Tea Plantation

May 3, 2009 | By | Add a Comment

This spring my husband and I took a trip to Charleston, SC. We are both big tea drinkers and thought it would be a fun side trip to stop at America’s only working tea plantation.

Here is the “Green Giant” as they call it. It was built with parts from a cotton gin and a tobacco harvesting machine. Most tea is actually gathered by hand, but this allows the Charleston Tea Plantation to harvest their tea with only three field hands.

These are new tea plants cloned from the original plants brought to the island 100 years ago.

This is a picture of several tea bush rows.
